National Easter road toll rises to 23
25th March 2008, 8:58 WST
The national Easter road toll has risen to 23, after a 14-year-old boy died when the car he was in crashed near his home east of Perth.
The death takes Western Australia's Easter holiday road toll to six.
Police said the Northam boy suffered serious injuries and emergency crews attempted to stabilise his condition, but he died before he could be airlifted to hospital.
A police spokesman said the single vehicle accident happened not far from the family home at Northam, about 100km east of Perth, around 10.30pm (WDT) on Monday.
The female driver's condition, and that of her 12-year-old daughter, was not known.
It's believed the car hit a pole.
Also on Monday, Victorian police confirmed a 59-year-old Victorian woman had died in hospital after an accident near Swan Hill last week.
The East Burwood woman died in The Alfred hospital on Saturday following the two-car collision on Thursday in which four others received minor injuries.
This took Victoria's Easter road toll to five.
Queensland continues to have the highest toll for the holiday period with seven deaths.
There were three deaths on Tasmanian roads over Easter and one in both South Australia and the Northern Territory.
No road deaths were reported in NSW or the ACT.
WA police say they are disappointed at the state's Easter road toll, which was WA's second highest on record.
The state's average during the period is usually between three and four.
WA's highest Easter road toll was seven last year.
Sergeant Graham Clifford said this year's toll equalled the six deaths in 2000.
"It's among our worst ever performances, so we're disappointed," Sgt Clifford said.
"Five out of six of the deaths were in the country, so that's disturbing."
Four of the six deaths appeared to be due to driver error, he said.
